Defending your freedom and your rights in drug possession cases
Have you been charged with possession of illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin, or marijuana? Or maybe you’ve been accused of obtaining illegal prescription drugs and distributing them to others? Whether it’s possession of a small amount of pot or major drug trafficking charges, I can help.
I’m San Antonio criminal defense attorney Bill Baskette. As a former judge and prosecutor, I know the law and what you face when you’re dealing with these charges. From the Law Office of Bill Baskette, I provide a skilled and aggressive defense against state and federal drug charges. Unlike other attorneys, I work directly with you, meaning that I handle your case personally, ensuring you benefit from my experience and professionalism. I know how judges and prosecutors think and how they strategize, whether your charge is possession, manufacturing, sales or any other case where an experienced felony lawyer is needed.
Representation for trafficking, distribution, possession and manufacturing
Drug charges are serious business, and my 30 years of experience defending clients charged with drug crimes can seriously help you. Drug crimes, including crimes involving marijuana, meth and cocaine, are aggressively prosecuted in Texas, and having the right attorney can make the difference between conviction and freedom.
Trafficking and distribution are serious drug crimes. These crimes are generally defined as any offense that shows intent to manufacture, import, export, distribute or dispense a controlled substance or possessing drugs with the intent to distribute them. Penalties for trafficking and distribution charges can be very harsh, and you may lose your home, car or other possessions, as well as getting time in prison.
Possession charges are severe as well. Depending on the amount of drugs you possess when you’re arrested for possession, you may be charged with a felony or a misdemeanor. If you’ve been carrying around a lot of drugs, however, you might also pick up a trafficking and intent to distribute charge as well.
If you’ve been charged with manufacturing a controlled substance or illegal drug, whether in a meth lab, a grow house or by mixing chemicals, you may be looking at a sentence of 180 days to life and fines of over $100,000.00. Those who make drugs, such as meth, are top targets in the ongoing War on Drugs, and the penalties show this. It doesn’t matter if you’re just putting narcotics in new packaging — manufacturing includes packaging, repackaging, labeling and relabeling as well. And even if you’re growing marijuana, which is not included in the Texas Controlled Substances Act, you can face heavy penalties.
Certain drugs, such as meth and cocaine, are classified as the most dangerous drugs under Texas law—possession of even a minimal (less than 1 gram) amount of either is a felony punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine of $10,000, while carrying more can get you up to 99 years and a $100,000 fine.
When you’re facing drug charges, I can give you the support and defense you need. My 30 years of experience practicing law in the San Antonio area have given me the knowledge and resources to represent you against these serious allegations. I look at the circumstances surrounding your arrest, the searches and seizures done by police and the reason for a traffic stop. When I can, I pursue alternative sentencing such as rehabilitation and treatment programs, which are far preferable to spending time in jail.
